R.I.P Eddie Guerrero asked:

Former WWE Women’s Champion Trish Stratus wrestled a match in Iceland last night. She defeated Icelandic Wrestling Association Women’s champion Svana Hronn Johannsdottir in a best-of-3-falls match. The contest was actually not professional wrestling, but something called “glima wrestling”. Glima wrestling is held on a wooden floor (not in a ring) and involves mostly takedowns.

The match was filmed for Trish’s new television show, “Stratusphere”. On the show, Trish tours world learning more about the sport of wrestling.

You can check out a photos of Trish and Icelandic Women’s Glima Champion Svana Hronn Johannsdottir by clicking here. A video clip of the whole match is also available online by clicking here. The entire match and an interview with Trish begins roughly seven minutes and 30 seconds into the video, which is taken from the Icelandic local news.

New Ideas for Wooden Decks

Filed under: Home And Family — wood_rings @ 5:50 am

Allan Wilson asked:

Many people today prefer homes which provide space to lounge around and have a very casual and a very relaxed atmosphere. Hence most homes have decks and patios which are not exactly rooms in the traditional sense. The decks are open and have plenty of space which gives a very peaceful and laid-back feel to the place which what most people seek. Thus as the wooden decks get popular, so do the new ideas about the decks.

More about Wooden Decks

Wooden decks are the most popular form of decks which are built in the houses. These decks are easy to maintain and look beautiful. Wooden decks give a feeling of being down to earth and being one with nature. They are the perfect form of decks to have, especially if they are located near the garden or look out on the lawn.

People today prefer wooden decks for all purposes. Decks are great places to spend time with family and friends. It is also the place for an outdoor party or get-together for families and friends in the warm summer days. Wooden decks are also the preferred place for a quiet drink or as a favourite reading place. To enjoy the pleasant summer days and the breeze with a sweet smell of the wild flowers or the garden soil, there is no better place than a wooden deck.

Wooden decks can be built in several ways. There is a standard way of building wooden decks. However they can be built by adopting new and unique ways.

New Ideas for Wooden Decks

Wooden decks can be built using unique architectural styles, new ideas of decor and having a very unconventional look about the wooden decks. Wooden decks are normally made of simple treated wood. Instead decks can be made of different kinds of treated wood like red wood, cedar wood, rose wood, mahogany, walnut wood etc. Another feature which can be included is that the decks can have awnings or a roof for protection from the elements. They can be attached such that the awnings can be removed whenever required.

Decks can also be made to look interesting with unique planters and exotic kinds of plants. The decks can also have climbers and trellises. They can also have delicately carved railings and benches which are made of unique shapes and sizes. A deck can look more attractive if some sort of skirting is added. A real luxury touch can be given to the deck is a screened-in gazebo.

How to build a wood deck

After finishing up your deck design plans and assembling the necessary apparatus and supplies, step one of construction will begin, which is preparing the site. This step is essential if you’ll be constructing the deck over an area that is currently grass-covered.

Once you get to know how large a rectangle you want the completed deck to occupy, quantify out this area and make marks on the ground to specify where the deck will lie. To make sure that your rectangle is true, measure crossways from corner to corner, both ways. Measure upper left to lower right, and upper right to lower left.

These measurements should be equal. Remove any grass or weeds from the measured area using a shovel, to shape your working space. Afterwards, before closing off this working space with decking, apply mulch over this space to restrain weeds.

Materials for wood deck

Some of the supplies from the hardware store, you will need to build a deck are likely to include the following materials. Flashing, Caulking compound, Pre-mixed concrete, Gravel or crushed stone, Cinder blocks, Post caps, Post bases, Seismic ties, Joist hangers, Cardboard tube concrete forms, Rebar.

If you want to use nails, use stainless steel or HDG nails. This can be either ring-shank nails or spiral-groove, for better holding power. But it would be preferable to use deck screws. Some of the other tools one might need for this deck project are follows. Shovel, Carpenter’s level, Carpenter’s square, Plumb bob, Wheelbarrow (for mixing concrete), Caulking gun, Drill, Wrench (to tighten lag screws), Hammer, Circular saw, Tape measure, Safety eyewear, Scrap lumber for bracing.

Final step

The final major step is wounding the decking boards themselves and screwing them to the tops of the joists. Totter the decking so that the seams don’t all line up; the deck will not only be steadier structurally this way, but will also look superior.

If your deck will be elevated off the ground, building codes dictate adding a railing. By the way, an accepted substitute now to wood decking is composite decking. However, amalgamated materials still aren’t as strong as good old wood, so composite decking must be support by wooden elements.

Conclusion:

For those who want to build wooden decks or want to renovate present decks, there are a wide range of ideas which can be implemented to make the decks look gorgeous and be a stand-out feature of the house.

Queen of England Exposed! - Royal Secrets, Love Affairs & Elizabeth’s Ring

Filed under: Art And Entertainment — wood_rings @ 9:09 am

Josephine Moss asked:

If you always thought history was dull - read on! When history books record the reigns of Kings and Queens of England we are presented with the dry bones - facts and dates of their various reigns and very little else.

Now you can find out just what made these Kings and Queens of England tick and also learn about the odd and bizarre things they got up to.

George II - the king who took his temper out on his wig!

When George II was cross or angry - which was fairly often - his face would turn crimson, his eyes would bulge and he would snatch off his wig, stamp on it and then kick it around the room. He was a short, stout, vain, pernickety and very irascible man who was not very attractive at all.

Queen Caroline (wife of George II) -  not a very loving mother!

Queen Caroline said of her eldest son - Frederick Louis - “my dear firstborn is the greatest ass, and the greatest liar…and the greatest beast in the whole world and I heartily wish he was out of it.”

Tudor Mummy - the Queen who lay indecently exposed for 200 years!

Queen Catherine de Valois - King Henry V’s wife, died in January 1437. She was buried with much pomp and circumstance in Westminster Abbey, where according to the custom of the time, her wooden effigy was carried before her coffin.

When Henry VII was buiding his great chapel her coffin was found decayed and Catherine’s body was put in a wooden box and placed near her Henry’s tomb, where its ‘badly apparelled’ state was left open to the curious gaze. She remained indecently exposed for 200 years and it was a favourite game for the boys of Westminster School to steal bits of her skin and bone.

She was reburied in 1776, but it wasn’t until 1878 that she got a final resting place in the Chapel of Henry V.

Samual Pepys recorded in his famous diary that on his 36th birthday in 1669, when Catherine had been dead 200 years, he had knelt down and kissed Queen Catherine’s lips.

The Essex Ring

Elizabeth I is known to have had many favourites but it is Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, whose name still lives with hers even though she was 33 years his senior. It is said that she gave him a ring that contained a cameo portrait of herself, as a token of her gratitude for defeating the Spanish at Cádiz. She told him, if ever he was in peril or if he ever fell out of favour with her, to send it to her as a reminder of her debt to him. Elizabeth signed his death warrant, hoping against hope (it is believed) that the ring would be returned. The captive Essex sent the ring from his cell in the Tower of London, but it is said that a jealous enemy stopped its delivery and the Queen never received it.

He was executed on 25 February 1601, on Tower Green at the Tower of London. Elizabeth was said to have wept for days, and became upset at the mere mention of his name for the rest of her life.

The “Essex Ring” was returned to Elizabeth, three centuries too late and was placed under glass and let into the side of her tomb. It was later removed and can be seen in the museum at Westminster Abbey.

The Spitting Queen!

In temper Elizabeth I was arbitrary, fickle, and passionate. When her blood was up, she would swear like a trooper, spit on a courtier’s new velvet suit, beat her maids of honor, and box Essex’s ears. She wrote abusive and even profane letters to high Church dignitaries, and she openly insulted the wife of Archbishop Parker, because she did not believe in a married clergy.

Jane of Castille - Crazy Jane

After Henry VII was widowed, he toyed with the idea of marrying Jane of Castille - Europe’s richest woman, (known as Crazy Jane) but he abandoned the plan after discovering that the embalmed body of her first husband, Phillip, went everywhere with her.

Destruction of the Armada, 1588 - Speech of Elizabeth I.

When all danger was past, Elizabeth went to Tilbury, on the Thames below London, to review the troops collected there to defend the capital. “I know,” said she, “that I have but the feeble body of a woman, but I have the heart of a king, and of a king of England too.” Unfortunately, the Queen’s brave sailors were half starved and many of them came home only to die.

This feature only highlights just a few of the Kings and Queens of England and their strange habits and behaviour. There is the king who had his jawbone stolen, the queen who suffered from indigestion, gout and bowel problems who gave birth to 16 children - all of whom died at birth…. and many, many more weird and wonderful tales for another time.

I bought 2 new rails from argos that come with wooden rings and have a little metal ring at the bottom. There’s no way to actually hook the curtains up to them though. Is there some other attachment that i need to buy, that hooks on the metal and can also hook onto the curtain?
