Are men (and women) supposed to take off their wedding rings during athletic activity?

For which activities should you take off your wedding ring? Or are there no instances in which you should take off your ring? Or are you always supposed to take of your ring when doing physical activity? I don’t take off my ring at the gym, but i’m starting to wonder if most other people do. What about sports? I play basketball, volleyball, and softball a lot. Do other people take of their rings when playing those sports?
