Is it true that in the US in the early 19th century, people wore wedding rings on the right hand?

I have read that some cultures/religions continue to wear wedding rings on the right hand, but I can find little documentation of the historical traditions attached to wedding rings in the US or the Americas.

I had an English professor whose wife was Greek. He wore his on his right hand. I always assumed it was because he was ultra liberal until I learned about his wife.
