Chair rung repair ? help me find these “WIDGETS” ?

johndeere2510 asked:

We have some wooden chairs with the bottom rungs coming loose. Glue won’t hold because they are too loose.

There are some little, barbed, slip-over things that I once saw…. they slip over the chair rung and then into the hole… and the metal barbs hold it tight.

What are these things called and where do I find them? My hardware store in my small town doesn’t carry them.

Thanks

  1. Try Rockler.com. I know they have them.

  2. Do yourself a favor and do it right. Clean the joint and reglue it. If you need to fill a gap, put in a little slip of wood veneer.

  3. I agree with Bob, these metal things may seem like a good idea, but they aren’t the correct way to fix it. They will still allow flexion at the joint, and this will cause the whole chair to slowly come apart.

If you need to fill a gap, go with that veneer idea, plus use Gorilla glue instead of Elmer’s. Gorilla glue can span more gap. It does seem to expand some when drying, so you may have to scrape a little off after it dries.
